Buffalo Stampede ANZ SkyRunning

Rain, drizzle and mud greeted me to the quaint Bright (4hrs inland from Melbourne). Not the weather I expected but none the less I got out on the course to see what was in store for the weekend. I was surprised at the steepness of the ups, the technical downs, the long climbs and winding flats. It is a hard course earning its title as a Sky Race, however minus the high altitude.

The first ANZ SkyRunning race, an exciting start to what will be a wonderful race series between NZ and Australia as well as bringing the internationals downunder!

We were lucky to have a great role model of what trail running is about – Dakota Jones, for the first edition to put down a sharp time and race to give all an awesome target to aim for.

With the added bonus for the winner (NZ/AUS athletes) in both the marathon and ultra distance races of a free ticket to compete in the SkyRunning World Championships in Chamonix in June, we saw some spectacular battles for the spot. With Ben Duffus and Blake Hose running literally into the ground with only a few miles to go, left the spot for the next 5 guys charging into the finish line only minutes apart. So off to Chamonix goes a strong team of about 12 runners all going to compete in various events, some for the first time and others well and truly experienced on this scene. It will be a wonderful experience for all.

Without the drive, passion and course knowledge from Marcus Warner from Ultra168 and Sean Greenhill this dream race and ANZ SkyRunning would not exist. Thank you for making this race possible for us all to enjoy.
